Flamboyan Series 2024

Chainstitch Embroidery on Canvas

This pair of large-scale abstract embroideries is inspired by the flamboyán trees that once stood in front of my family’s home in Puerto Rico. Known for their brilliant red and golden blossoms, these trees were vivid fixtures of our landscape—alive with color and memory. Before Hurricane George struck the island, a red and a yellow flamboyán framed our home. The storm tore them from the earth. We mourned their loss.

These pieces—Flamboyán Roja and Flamboyán Dorada—are stitched in their memory. Through layered cotton thread on canvas, I tried to capture their color, energy, and presence. Not as a literal rendering, but as a gesture of remembrance.

Flamboyán Roja 2024

40" x 40"
Chainstitch embroidery on canvas, framed in oak

Flamboyán Roja honors the fiery red blossoms of the flamboyán tree. The stitching moves in bursts and curves, echoing the intensity and spread of its bloom. This piece holds the memory of the red tree that once grew outside our home—its brightness, its heat, and the absence it left behind.

Flamboyán Dorada 2024

40" x 40"
Chainstitch embroidery on canvas, framed in oak

Flamboyán Dorada is a tribute to the golden flamboyán, whose softer hue was no less radiant. The embroidery flows with warmth and rhythm, mirroring the movement of petals in sunlight. This piece is a quiet reflection on beauty, impermanence, and what it means to remember through making.
